Oakwood was initially a rural area that was part of the larger Roundhay estate, located on the outskirts of Roundhay Park and owned by George Goodman. The district was part of the Leeds Rural District, which included the expanding estates of Roundhay and Seacroft, and had close ties to the city of Leeds. In 1825, the land was sold to a wealthy local family involved in the wool trade. Following the purchase, the construction of Oakwood House, initially named Wood End, began. While it is uncertain when construction started, maps from the period suggest it occurred between 1825 and 1847.
