The name Holbeck dates back to the 12th century and is derived from the words ‘hol’ meaning ‘a hollow’ and ‘beck’ 
meaning ‘a stream’. The name reflects the local topography, as the area is situated in a hollow through which a stream runs. The use of the word ‘beck’ is a reminder of the Viking influence on the area during the Viking
Age, as it is an Old Norse loanword meaning ‘stream’.
Holbeck was originally part of the manor belonging to the priory of the Holy Trinity in York. After the Dissolution of the Monasteries, it passed to the Darcy and Ingram families. In the 18th century, Holbeck was still a village located outside of Leeds. The area expanded due to the development of hand weaving, which became a prominent industry at the time.
In addition, Holbeck was known for its spa water during this period, which was similar to the water found in Harrogate. The water was carried into Leeds for sale, but the supply began to diminish as numerous wells were sunk to supply the mills and works in the area. As a result, the water could only be obtained by pumping from a considerable depth, which affected its availability.
