Kirkstall gets its name from a Northern dialect of Old English language, where ‘Kirk’ means ‘church’ and ‘stall’ means ‘place.’ The name thus refers to the ‘site of a church.’ During the English Civil War, the bridge over the Aire River in Kirkstall was destroyed by Royalist troops from Leeds. This bridge was referred to as ‘Churchstall’ in a contemporaneous account. After discovering this, a Parliamentary force led by Ferdinando Fairfax, 2nd Lord Fairfax of Cameron, had to cross the river upstream at Apperley Bridge before retaking Leeds in January 1643. Lord Fairfax was from Otley.

Keep them clean
Use a damp cloth to wipe down the doors regularly and remove dust, dirt, and other debris. Avoid using abrasive cleaning products that can damage the door’s finish.
Lubricate hinges and locks
Apply a lubricant such as WD-40 to the hinges to keep them operating smoothly. Remove any excess lubricant with a clean cloth. Locks should be lubricated with graphite powder.
Check for damage
Regularly inspect the doors for any cracks, chips, or scratches. Address any damage as soon as possible to prevent further deterioration.
Adjust the door if necessary
If the door is not closing properly, it may need to be adjusted. Check the hinges and make necessary adjustments to ensure proper alignment. By following these tips, you can keep your internal doors looking and functioning well for years to come.
